Gig Driver Earnings Log: Simplify Your Income Tracking

The Ultimate Guide to Efficient Income Tracking for Gig Drivers

As a gig driver, keeping track of your earnings is crucial for financial planning and business decisions. Whether you drive for UberEats, DoorDash, or Grubhub, having a simple and efficient system can make a big difference.

In this blog post, I’ll introduce you to a straightforward method using a Google Spreadsheet.

The Problem: Complex Earnings Tracking

I stumbled upon a Reddit post where fellow gig drivers were seeking an easy way to calculate their monthly earnings.

Many existing services required users to link their actual accounts, which raised privacy concerns. Plus, some of these services charge a monthly fee.

That’s when I decided to create my own solution.

Examples of Complex Tracking:

  1. Third-Party Apps: Some apps automatically pull data from your gig platforms, but they demand access to your account credentials. This approach can be risky and intrusive.

  2. Monthly Fees: Paying a subscription fee just to track your earnings seems counterproductive. As gig drivers, we want to maximize our income, not spend it on unnecessary services.

The Solution: A Custom Google Spreadsheet

Instead of relying on third-party apps, I built a Google Spreadsheet that allows gig drivers to manually input their earnings data without sharing sensitive login information.

Let’s break down how it works:

Sheet1: Earnings Data Entry

  1. Date and Time: Each row in Sheet1 represents a specific earnings entry. You’ll enter the date and time of the gig.

  2. Type: Choose the gig platform—UberEats, DoorDash, or Grubhub.

  3. Amount: Input your actual earnings for that gig.

  4. Notes: Add any relevant notes (e.g., surge pricing, special tips).

  5. Automatic Month Calculation: The month is automatically generated based on the date.

Sheet2: Automatic Summary

Sheet2 is where the magic happens. It requires no manual input because everything is derived from Sheet1:

  1. Monthly Earnings: The spreadsheet aggregates your earnings by month. You’ll see how much you made from each company (UberEats, DoorDash, or Grubhub) in a given month.

  2. Comparison: Easily compare performance between companies. Which month did UberEats outperform DoorDash? Analyze trends and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Example:

  • In April, you noticed that Grubhub consistently outperformed the other platforms. Armed with this insight, you decide to allocate more time to Grubhub deliveries in May.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Get Your Own Spreadsheet: Get our Google Spreadsheet with the two tabs—Sheet1 and Sheet2.

  2. Enter Data in Sheet1: Regularly input your gig earnings, following the format described above.

  3. Analyze and Decide: Use the insights from Sheet2 to make informed business decisions.

Should you focus more on Grubhub next month? Is DoorDash consistently better during certain seasons?
